The Howick Academy Of Judo has been a cornerstone of the Auckland martial arts community for over fifty years. Founded by Ivan Willis, a sixth dan Judoka, the club has grown from its roots in Howick to serve the wider area, including St Heliers and Kohimarama. Today, it operates under the leadership of experienced instructors dedicated to teaching judo in a safe, inclusive environment.

Training sessions take place at two key locations: the Howick Recreation Centre on Pakuranga Road and the Barfoot & Thompson Stadium on Kohimarama Road. These venues support the club’s mission to make judo accessible across the region. Classes are structured to accommodate all levels, from Beginners to Seniors, with specific programs tailored for juniors and intermediates.

Lester Harris, Head Instructor and principal owner, holds a 2nd Dan rank and possesses a Level 1 & 2 Coaching Certificate, an Area B Referee Certificate, and an Area A Tournament Technician Certificate. He has been involved with the club since 2007 and has been actively training since 2011.

Lawrie Crooke, another Head Instructor, brings over 30 years of experience and holds the rank of 4th Dan. He is a Judo New Zealand level 3 coach and a National A level referee, contributing deep technical and competitive expertise.

Olivia Manning, the Female Director, is a senior presence on the mat. Currently a 1st kyu (brown belt), she aims for black belt and holds a Level 1 Coaching Certificate, supporting the development of female judoka within the club.
